Introducing a completely new, unused STI Type RA / S209 engine long block assembly with absolutely ZERO miles. This product consists of a fully assembled bare long block EJ257. To get it running, all that’s needed is to move your accessories to this new engine. If you prefer not to do that, you can buy an accessory kit from us, which can be either included with the engine or installed at our facility for an additional fee. Please reach out for pricing.
Included in the assembly are:
- A brand new EJ257 Short Block 2.5L OEM 10103AD020 from Type RA / S209

Warranty Details: Enjoy a three-year or 36,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first. Subaru of America will honor this warranty. Be sure your VIN matches the part number 10103AD020. The installation must be completed by an ASE certified shop. For the warranty to be valid, you must also install a brand new OEM VF48 Turbo, oil cooler, oil pump, oil feed banjo bolts, AVCS solenoids, and cam gears (proof of purchase must be provided or the items should be purchased directly from us).
Shipping Information: This item will be shipped by freight. The listed price is for a business address that has a forklift or loading dock. Free shipping requires a business location with these facilities. If you do not have such a location, we can send it to your home address; however, there will be an additional charge of approximately $150 to $350 for residential delivery and liftgate service depending on your location. Important note: A 5% cancellation fee applies to this item. We also cannot change shipping addresses for this item, so please ensure the correct address is provided to avoid the cancellation charge.
The block features the same casting as the latest engines, marked “705.” It uses the same nitrided, full-counterweight crankshaft found in earlier EJ25 models. However, this crankshaft lacks the extra oiling ports that some special edition EJs have. Bearings and clearances have been consistent with standard late-model EJ257 specifications so far.

At first glance, both the Type RA and STI pistons look like they are made from machined cast materials. Their dish volumes are nearly identical, and the depth of their valve reliefs matches. However, contrary to some expectations, the Type RA is not equipped with forged pistons. Still, there is a chance that the Type RA pistons could be constructed from a different, more ductile alloy, given that they come from Hitachi instead of Aisin. Additionally, the crown of the Type RA pistons seems to be about 1 to 2mm thicker than that of the STI piston, although this is difficult to see in the photo.

Examining the side profile reveals several distinctions. To begin with, the coating on the upper ringland of the earlier STI pistons extends to the crown. This variation is probably attributed to production differences, such as variations in tooling, rather than indicating any unique performance changes. Additionally, the Type RA piston features significantly more material supporting the wrist pin.
The compression height, ring position, and other measurements seem unchanged. This indicates that the ringlands maintain the same position and thickness. The top ring gaps measured 0.010″, 0.010″, 0.011″, and 0.011″, while the lower ring gaps were 0.014″, 0.014″, 0.014″, and 0.015″.

From the bottom view, you can observe the increased material in the wrist pin area (marked in red) and the smaller size of the central support (shown in green). The Type RA design enhances piston rigidity by lessening the cantilever effect and providing improved support for the wrist pin. With the previous STI pistons weighing 414 grams, the Type RA pistons come in at 424 grams. This additional 10 grams is negligible compared to the enhancements in the piston design. For reference, forged pistons for the EJ257 usually range from 370 to 400 grams based on the bore size and design. Both engines share the same weight for the wrist pins.

From what I can see, the Type RA rods look just like the rods from the GR STI. It’s not a shock, since the rods are certainly not the weak spot in the engine. However, there are some distinctions between the newer model rods and the older EJ257 and EJ207 rods, especially concerning the closed channel in the internal bore of the big end and the absence of a straight reinforcement rib.

No visual differences between the GR STI rod, and in fact, the 2018 STI and Type RA rods share the same part number.

Warranty Notice: Subaru of America provides a warranty solely for parts that are installed by an AUTHORIZED Subaru Dealership. Additionally, the part must correspond with the vehicle's VIN. For instance, if you replace a WRX engine with an STi engine at a friend's shop, do not anticipate that your warranty will cover any failures! Please use caution and think carefully.
